A fast trip from Southport to Sydney
Southport Delivery Skipper
We provide professional sail and power boat deliveries throughout Australia, with experienced delivery skippers relocating yachts for private owners, brokers and manufacturers. This delivery involved a J/130 from Southport on the Gold Coast to Sydney, an offshore coastal passage that combines open-water sailing with careful weather and routing decisions.
The direct passage covers approximately 430 nautical miles. Although straightforward in terms of navigation, the route includes several exposed sections of coastline where sea state and wind direction have a significant influence on both comfort and progress. Selecting a suitable departure window is often the most important factor in completing the delivery efficiently while avoiding unnecessary time sheltering in port.
Before leaving Southport, routine delivery checks included engine and saildrive fluid levels, steering systems, navigation lights, communications equipment and battery condition. Electronic charts and waypoints were reviewed, while the autopilot was tested to confirm reliable operation before heading offshore. For a performance yacht such as the J/130, ensuring all running rigging and deck hardware are in good working order also forms part of the pre-departure inspection.
Throughout the delivery, regular engine inspections, weather updates and log entries formed part of the normal watch routine. On arrival in Sydney, the yacht was secured alongside, washed down with fresh water to remove salt accumulation and prepared for handover. A post-delivery report detailing engine hours, fuel consumption and any maintenance observations was provided to the owner, leaving the vessel ready for its next cruise or race campaign.
