We delivered this great passage maker down the east coast to Hobart
We provide professional sail and power boat deliveries throughout Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific, relocating yachts for private owners, brokers and insurers. This delivery involved a 47-foot sailing yacht from Australia’s east coast to Hobart, a passage requiring careful weather planning before crossing Bass Strait and continuing down Tasmania’s east coast.
Depending on the departure port, the voyage typically covers between 650 and 800 nautical miles. While much of the passage follows the Australian coastline, Bass Strait demands respect regardless of vessel size. Rather than working to a fixed departure date, weather forecasts were monitored closely to identify a suitable window for the crossing, reducing unnecessary exposure to strong winds and steep seas.
Before departure, routine delivery inspections included checking engine oil, coolant and gearbox fluid levels, inspecting the steering system, testing the autopilot and confirming all navigation electronics were operating correctly. Navigation routes and electronic charts were reviewed, while safety equipment was checked before leaving the marina. A selection of spare consumables, including fuel filters, an impeller and engine belts, was also carried on board should routine maintenance be required during the voyage.
Once underway, regular engine inspections, weather updates and navigation log entries formed part of the daily watch routine. The yacht was monitored throughout the passage, with ongoing checks of rigging, sail handling systems and battery charging to ensure everything continued to operate as expected during the offshore sections.
Following arrival in Hobart, the yacht was secured in its berth, washed down with fresh water to remove accumulated salt and prepared for handover. A comprehensive post-delivery report detailing engine hours, fuel usage and any maintenance observations was supplied to the owner, providing a clear record of the passage and the vessel’s condition on completion of the delivery.
