As a delivery skipper, I have sailed many different types of yachts across various oceans. One of the most enjoyable and comfortable deliveries we have done was on a Leopard 44 from Fiji to New Zealand.
The Leopard 44 was a well-designed sailing catamaran that featured two cockpits, one fore and one aft, with plenty of space to relax and enjoy the views. The forward cockpit was easily accessed from the saloon through an internal door, which also provided great ventilation and natural light.
The aft cockpit had a large table and seating area, as well as a gas barbecue and a cockpit shower. The hard-top bimini offered good protection from the sun and rain, and also had solar panels mounted on the aft side.
The Leopard 44 is built in an assembly line at the company’s plant in Cape Town, South Africa. The boat has a spacious and elegant interior, with a fiberglass liner. The liner is securely bonded to the hull, which is vacuum-bagged E-glass over a balsa core. The hull has a gelcoat that resists water damage and a flare above the waterline that increases the interior volume.
The boat Yacht Delivery Solutions delivered had the three-cabin layout, with the starboard hull for the owner. It had a queen-size berth aft, with a hanging locker outboard near the end of the berth.
The Leopard 44 had a spacious and modern interior, with three double cabins and three bathrooms, as well as two small single bunks in the midships and one in the front cabin. The saloon table could also convert to a double bed if needed. The galley was located upstairs, next to the helm station, and had ample storage and counter space, as well as a huge drawer-type fridge and freezer.
The boat was equipped with air-conditioning, generator, inverter, microwave, digital TV, Bluetooth stereo, and underwater blue lights. The navigation instruments included a colour GPS plotter, autopilot, wind instruments, and electric halyard winch.
The Leopard 44 sailed beautifully, with a full-batten mainsail and a roller-furling headsail. The boat was very stable and easy to handle, even in strong winds and waves which is inevitable conditions on the delivery to NZ. The twin diesel engines gave good performance and manoeuvrability under power, and the fuel consumption was reasonable. The Leopard 44 has won several awards for its innovative design and also performance and I could see why. It was a perfect boat for cruising or chartering in any waters.
I would highly recommend the Leopard 44 to anyone looking for a comfortable, spacious, and fun sailing catamaran. It was a pleasure to deliver this boat from Fiji to New Zealand. We found the vessel to offer a solid work platform and we felt secure and comfortable at all times
